The continent's football ruling body; the Confederation of African Football has made a landmark decision to grow the women's game with the creation of an African women's club event that is expected to kick off in 2021 with at least 10 participating teams.

The development follows the assurance of the CAF supremo to strengthen the growth of women's football after the launch of the four-year women's football strategic plan last November in Egypt.

The launch of the club competition for the women's game is generating huge excitement across the continent despite some reservations about the format to adopt.

According to CAF top administrators, the creation of the women's club event was hugely necessary amidst the concerns over the lack of professional women's football leagues in Africa and according to the Confederation of African Football President, Ahmad, the newly created CAF Women's Champions League will kick off in 2021 but the format of play still under study.

“We will have 10 to 15 clubs from several countries that are going to participate and we are going to start in 2021,” Ahmad said.

“How we are going to start the Women's Champions League will be handled by our technical and competition officials. And with regards to the model, no matter what the problem could be, we must start in 2021. We know that all the competitions in Africa started with few participants and a lot of things are put in place,” Ahmad added while speaking to the media.

Mean while in Uganda here, the U -17 Head Coach, Ayub Khalifah has welcomed the ideal saying that the creation of the CAF Women Champions League will improve the quality among local players and clubs in general.

“The Women Champions League will push players and clubs to work harder thus enormously improving on their quality,” Ayub Khalifah said.

“With this platform in place, we will be pushed to play the FUFA Women Super League (FWSL) with an ultimate goal of finishing in the CAF Champions League places. Everyone will strive harder than before and in the long run the quality of the Women’s game will go up. Even the girls themselves will be more focused and will also put in much more effort to be among those big clubs that are able to make it to the continent,” Ayub Khalifah added.
