Professional boxing events called off due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Most organizers and promoters of professional boxing in the country have been forced to postpone their events following the extension by 21 days of the public lockdown by President Yoweri Museveni as the world tries to put up a fight to defeat the COVID -19’ disease called by the Corona virus.

The lockdown that was announced on 18th March was supposed to end on 20th. April but need to fight more, the government decided to push it further up to 5th. May.

As the earlier one, this one also was a hard hit to the boxing promoters who are now forced to push their events to dates that they are also uncertain of.

 “Apparently we can’t stage an event under these circumstances,” Emmanuel Mwesigwa, of Great Strikers Promotions told Sportz Now.

“Our fighter Shafik Kiwanuka was in high gear preparation against Egyptain Abdalla Samy on 29th. May but this can’t happen now because the lockdown extension is going to affect our training schedule,” he added.

“We cannot confirm the new dates as of now but after discussions with all our partners we shall be informing the public when this fight can stand again on our program; and obviously, It will also depend on the situation in Egypt.” Mwesigwa explained.

In the other development, Step by Step Promotions under Eddie Gombya has also postponed its National Welterweight Title that was slated for 21st. June between Charles Mulindwa and Mwesigwa Tansala.

“We shall have called off this fight and if all goes well again, we shall stage it Boxing Day,” said Gombya.

“We want a fight where the fighter is in good shape because it’s our policy here at Step by step to give our fans the best,” Gombya added.

Richardson Kigozi’s Amigo Promotions is the other company affected with the lockdown extension.

Amigo Promotions was in higher gear preparations for the fight between Kenny Lukyamuzi and Chikondi Makawa from Malawi which was slated for 20th. June and are now looking at a later date in August or October.

However, Nara Promotions who are planning to stage a fight between Moses Golola and Kizito Ogom a.k.a Kasumaali in August are confident that if the lockdown is lifted as said in early May, they fight will go on as planned.
