The league that is expected to run for the entire year will have fights for all the National Open Champions from every category.

As a UBF we have initiated a new idea to see that our boxers are kept fit and active and also try to make our national team selection easy,” Muhangi said.

“We have come up with a new competition named Champions League to cover up for the gap when the boxers are done with the National Open Championship.”

“This League shall keep them fit at all times; even at the time when national team duty calls.”

According to the UBF, the league with be played based on a round robin system where each group will be composed of four boxers and  the ones with the most points will automatically become Uganda’s representatives at any given tournament.

In the line of advancing the boxing pro agenda, Muhangi says that league shall also be a breeding event for boxers who may have preference of turning in to professionals.

“For those who want to professional, we shall have five rounds instead of three rounds,” Muhangi noted.

If all goes according to plan, the UBF Boxing Champions League will start in April and action will be at the MTN Indoor Sports Stadium with every weekend carrying up to six bouts.

“We have met with the boxer and given them a brief about the championship. We are giving them this one month of March to prepare as we also work on all the clearances,” Muhangi said.

We also want to develop it as a boxing brand to give the boxing followers and supporters enough fun throughout the year as well as use it to attract sponsors into Boxing,” Muhangi added.
