Gisagara Volleyball Club have appointed former Rwanda National Team Captain, Lawrence Yakan Guma as thier new Head Coach following the resignation of Fidele Nyirimana.

Yakan's appointment was announced on Wednesday. 15th. March. 2023 by the club President, Clovis Mudahemuka and he is expected to start work with immediate effect.

Yakan whose roots are Ugandan but decided to play for Rwanda has been employed and he put pen to paper on a one year contract; with the option of renewal based on performance.

The man he replaces stood down siting personal reasons after a 3rd place finish at the 2023 Memorial Kayumba tournament in Huye.

"We signed a head coach named Lawrence Yakan Guma from Uganda," said Clovis Mudahemuka, Gisagara Club President as quoted by the New Times Daily of Rwanda.

"He has signed a one-year contract that can be extended if he produces satisfactory results. He will start work not later than next week.

"The club is still ambitious to win titles, we are looking for other great players and four have already signed. The target is to win trophies and please our fans,”  Mudahemuka added.

The former Sport S Volleyball Club, Sky Volleyball Club of Uganda; APR Volleyball Club (Rwanda) and Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler (Japan) player retired from active volleyball after the 2021 CAVB African Nations’ Championship held in Kigali.

He is a level II trained coach, a status he attained after under taking a second level coaching training held in Nairobi, Kenya, in June 2022.

Yakan isn't new to coaching having had stints at Sky Volleyball Club (Uganda) and Orange Block Busters _ OBB Volleyball Club (Uganda) with whom he won the Uganda Volleyball Federation National Volleyball League last season.

Yakan who is also a former player of  Gisagara now returns in a managerial capacity and they will be looking up to him to try and win them the National League which they lost to Rwanda Energy Group last season.

The task ahead of the former Right- handed Opposite is not a small one because the side he is going to work with is not only a big one in Rwanda and the region at large but also very ambitious. 

Last year, they finished third at the Africa Volleyball Club Championship held in Tunisia; a testimony of how big and ambitious they are.
