CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup semi-finals postponed.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League and Confederation Cup semi-finals join the latest sports continental games to be postponed by the Confederation of African Football; the African football governing body.
This postponement joins the AFCON 2021 qualifiers (match day 3 and 4), CHAN 2020 finals in Cameroon as well as the FIFA U-17 Women World Cup qualifiers which were earlier postponed.
The CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup semi-finals were scheduled for 1-3 May (first leg) and 8-10 May (second leg).
“In light of growing concerns and evolving nature on COVID-19 amidst lockdown in most countries, the CAF Emergency Committee has decided to postpone the following matches until further notice. CAF will announce new dates for the semi finals and final after monitoring the situation.” CAF Statement read
In the CAF Champions League semi-finals; Alhy (Egypt) will take on Wydad Casablanca (Morocco); and Zamalek (Egypt) will play Raja Casablanca (Morocco).
In the CAF Confederation Cup, Horoya AC (Guinea) will face Pyramids (Egypt); and in this semi final, two Ugandans will be involved_ Robert Odongkara for Horoya AC and Abdul Lumala for Pyramids.
And in the other semi final, Hassania Agadir (Morocco) will play RS Berkane (Morocco).
The CAF Champions League final will be hosted by Japoma stadium in Douala in Cameroon while the CAF Confederation League final will be hosted at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
For the first time in history, these two CAF championships will have a one match final affair unlike the previous years where finals were played in a home and away format.
Compared to other regions, Africa has a significantly low count of people who contracted the disease with just under 13,000 confirmed cases as of Saturday, April 11th and nearly 700 people lost their lives.
